An interesting and historically significant Chinese export plate, based on an engraving published during the French Revolution depicting an urn, but on closer inspection one finds at the base of the urn profiles of the Dauphin and Madame Royale. Pieces such as this were ordered by royalist sympathizers lamenting the 1793 overthrow on the monarchy. This depiction is known as the “Urne Mysterieuse.”
Aside from the profiles forming the negative space at the base of the urn, you will find the other two profiles located at 9 and 2 o’clock (looking at the circular design as a clock face) with the facial profiles forming parts of the outlines of the tree trunks and branches.
