Exceptional Chinese export porcelain punch bowl made for Charles Vaughan (1759-1839) of Hallowell, Maine. He was the second son of Samuel Vaughan, a London merchant and friend of George Washington.
The exterior has a large border made up of dark blue over-glaze enamel and gilt, with a segmented arch to allow the mast of a war ship to fit. On the opposite side is a polychrome Great Seal of the United States, and between these two on either side are dark blue enamel baskets flanked by sprigs of flora and highlighted with gilt accents. At the center of the interior is a drape-and-shield decoration encompassing the initials “CV” flanked by dark blue over-glaze enamel sprigs with gilt highlights.
